kills attacking bear in Alaska
KODIAK, Alaska (AP) A Washington state man shot and killed a bear mauling his hunting partner on a small Alaskan island and then its cub that popped out from some brush.
KMXT reports Michael Snowden of Sitka suffered leg injuries in the brown bear attack Tuesday.
Snowden and Jeff Ostrin of Camas, Wash., dragged a deer they had shot to a beach to be picked up and stopped for lunch. The bears caught wind of the deer.
A sow came through the brush and attacked Snowden. Ostrin stepped back, took aim with his rifle and killed it. One of the bear s two cubs then emerged, and the hunter fatally shot it.
State wildlife official Larry Van Daele says Ostrin is a hero for killing the bears, tending to Snowden s wounds and getting help.

Seconds later an adult sow brown bear charged through the brush and jumped onto the survivor. Startled, the witness backed up about 10 feet and watched the struggle, aiming and waiting for a clear shot. When the opportunity arose, the witness shot the bear with a 30.06 once in the rump while it was on top of the survivor. The bear backed away and the witness shot it again in the chest. Following the second shot, the bear and survivor rolled down the hill and became separated. When the second bear appeared coming at him through the brush the witness shot the bear twice with a .454 revolver, killing it. This bear was smaller than the first.
The witness returned to the survivor to evaluate and treat the injuries.
