Jim McDonnell facing runoff against Paul Tanaka
Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell surged to a big lead in early returns for Los Angeles County sheriff on Tuesday but was falling just short of the threshold to avoid a runoff vote in November.
McDonnell appeared headed for a general election campaign against Paul Tanaka, the controversial former undersheriff and mayor of Gardena.
If elected, McDonnell would be the first outsider to head the Los Angeles Sheriff Department in a century. McDonnell campaign had touted that outsider status in a contest that largely focused on the department problems.
