iPhone 6 Plus bends easily Updated x2
It s big, thin and made of a malleable metal, so it should come as no surprise that the 5.5 inch iPhone 6 Plus can be bent. What is surprising is just how epatagonia outletasily this can happen, as a growing number of owners of Apple s new oversized smartphone are discovering.
MacRumors reports one of its readers posted to the site s forums that his iPhone 6 Plus developed a curve after being in his front pants pockets for a few hours:
Yepatagonia everlong review apartments2sterday, I left at 10am with the iPhone in my left FRONT pocket of my suit pants. I drove 4 hours to a wedding, which also involved a lot of sitting during dinner etc but also 2 3 hours of dancing. I left at 2am and went to bed, driving home 4 hours back.
So in total, the 6 Plus was about 18 hours in my pocket while sitting mostly.
As I lay it on the coffee table and sat down on the couch to relax from the drive (yes, sitting again), I patagonia better sweater hoody salesaw the reflection of the window in the iPhones slightly distorted. Now I lay it flat with the display side on the table, take a look.
Since then, there have been other reports of similar, front pocket bending of the iPhone 6 Plus. One person even posted a video showing how easy it is to bend a 6 Plus with your bare hands (though it looks like he s applying a lot of force to me).
As you d expect, some folks are having big fun with this development. Twitter hashtags such as bendgate and bendghazi have sprung up and yes, there will be memes.
Several media outlets have reached out to Apple for a response. CNet said Apple declined to comment.
If you ve got an iPhone 6 Plus, check it for a bend or curve, particularly if you ve been keeping it in a pants pocket. E mail me a photo if yours has bent, and tell upatagonia fleece for sales about it in the comments.
And if your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus is still straight, get it into a rigid case, ASAP.
Update 9.24.2014: The same guy who bent an iPhone 6 Plus with his bare hanpatagonia backcountry guide pants men'sds in the video above has tried the same thing with other phones, including the standard iPhone 6. Check it out below.
Update 9.25.2014: Apple has finally issued a statement on the issue of iPhone 6 Plus bendpatagonia everlong review apartments0ability. Interestingly, the company spatagonia pro purchaseays only 9 people have actually reported the problem to Apple.
Here s Apple s statement, as reported by MacRumors:
Our iPhones are designed, engineered and manufactured to be both beautiful and sturdy. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus feature a precision engineered unibody enclosure constructed from machining a custom grade of 6000 series anodized aluminum, which is tempered for extra strength. They also feature stainless steel and titanium inserts to reinforce high stress locations and use the strongest glass in the smartphone industry. We chose these high quality materials and construction very carefully for their strength and durability. We also perform rigorous tests throughout the entire development cycle including 3 point bending, pressure point cycling, sit, torsion, and user studies. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus meet or exceed all of our high quality standards to endure everyday, real life use.
With normal use a bend in iPhone is extremely rare and through our first six dpatagonia everlong review apartments1ays of sale, a total of nine customers have contacted Apple with a bent iPhone 6 Plus. As with any Apple product, if you have questions please contact Apple.
MacRumors also says that Apple has been directing its support staff to replace affected phones under warpatagonia everlong review apartments3ranty following a visual inspection.
Apple s stock was down today in the wake of the so called Bendgate issue and Wednesday s iOS 8.0.1 update debacle.
My Nokia Lumia 1520 has a 6 screen, is thin and it doesn bend. In fact, it is darn near indestructible. I use it without a case and carry it in both my front and back pockets for hours on end. Why am I able to do those? Because Nokia devices division (now Microsoft) knows how to properly stress test their devices.
This is at least the third iPhone released with MAJOR design flaws out of the gate. Remember the iPhone 4 with its very fragile glass backing? How about the iPhone antennae issues who can forget the, holding it wrong! statement by Apple? Their customers apparently.
The problem here is, the consumers eat up everything Apple spoon feeds them so why would they spend the time, money apatagonia everlong review apartmentsnd resources to properly test devices when they know people will line up by the millions to gobble them up like the over priced and flawed patagonia everlong review iphonedevices they are?
Form and function is lost on Apple, and their customers. This is the very reason they can charge you $2000 for a MacBook whose PC hardware equivalent is less that $800.
this is why it a foolish statement to say just feels more substantial Feelings evidently won pass the butt curve stress endurance test. This is why plastic is better in this application: it can recover. Note from all the photos that the phones apparently STILL WORK. The aluminum cover is the weak spot.
Problem is, Dwight, putting it in a stiff case as long as it is still patagonia guide jacket and jeansplastic will not avoid the issue. Even the stiffest plastic cases are more flexible than aluminum so the bend will still happen. The plastic will recover, the aluminum won Don want any flexing? glue a 1/4 thick piece of steel (not aluminum) to the back. A plastic case can help with bumps and shock but not bending stress.
Exactly, bend flex. Plastic flexes, metal bends. HTC and Nokia are the only two phone makers I trust to use without cases or worry. Nokia (now Microsoft) utilizes unibody patagonia guide pants bootspolycarbonate for the very reasons you explain while HTC continues to do a great job of building aluminum phones with rigidity.
Apple should take a lesson from either, they claim to make design an integral part of the experience but they continue to make devices that require cases to maintain longevity. The glass backed iPhone 4 and the exposed antennae of previous models make for a track record of doing so.
If you are going to use aluminum, you need to make it rigid with seams, bends or internal reinforcement from other materials. They could have used polycarbonate or steel inserts behind the aluminum to keep it rpatagonia map onlineigid as an example.
