I have a 2002 Dodge dakota 3
The most common cause of your condition would be a bad engine coolant temperature sensor. If the sensor is not reading correctly it will affect the engine the most before the engine has warmed up enough that the computer is getting feedback from the oxygen sensors. Of course you would need a scan tool to compare the coolant temperature reading the computer is getting to an actual temperature at the sensor as read with an infrared thermometer, if there is more than 10 degrees of difference the sensor is bad and must be replaced. If I have answered your question please hit accept.
It can be reading a temperature that is not real, for instance 80F when temperature is actually 40F, but the sensor still chapatagonia outlet new york statenges voltage when the engine warms, it just always reads 40 degrees less than actual, since the computer sees the temperature change it thinks the sensor is operating correctly. The computer does not know that it is not really 80F outside, but it patagonia guide jacket nike0will adjust the fuel mixture at start up to a level for this temperature. The computer will only set a code when the sensor fails outside a set parameter, on a 2002 these parameters are very wide. It backfires through the exhaust (99.9 % Sure, my understanding is that through the intake would be loud like a shotgun and i would know it. This sounds like its under me in the exhaust) on acceleration.
When i down shift and floor it the engine hits about 2200 RPM or so and takes off and then it will back fire and lose power at the low end in the next gear.
Truck has 127,000 miles. Drove it about 100 miles round trip today. will not do this unless engine is cold.
If you can help me with thpatagonia guide jacket nike2is and stick with me i will definatly leave a bonus.
I am semi short on money and handy with cars, so i am trying to stay away from the dodge dealership as the vehicle is worth less than 2000 dollars.
Thank you so muchHi Mike! The exhaust backfire caught me by surprise, but might turn out to be a simpler repair if we get lucky on the first crack. I initially thought you would have an intake backfire, but it not as bad as the old days when it happens. since 99.9% of the volume of the intake manifold is just air these days, there isn much to explode in there unlike the old carbureted days. But since you feel the noise comes from under the truck. not the engine area. The swellinpatagonia simple guide pants testg between layers can physically crack the coil and allow spark to find an easy path to ground, which severely limits output to the plugs. A patagonia guide jacket nike3quick and easy check is to pull any of the plug wires and insert a patagonia hiking guide bookPhillips screwdriver into the open end. Start the engine and place the shaft of the driver near a good ground source to see how much spark can be coaxed from the secondary ignition. Be careful to avoid getting bit. If it appears OK, try shooting the coil with a stream of water and repeat the test. the connection between the coil and the distributor. They tend to burn out at the ends, leaving heavy white dust deposits when there trouble. Check for dust at either end and if in doubt, check with an ohmmeter set on 20K ohms. Any continuity shown by the meter at that scale is OK. If no continuity is present, the wire is burned out. Has the distributor ever been turned or replaced without benefit of a re index? Ignition timing is determined by a fixed sensor located on the right upper tranpatagonia insulated better sweater hoody mens closeoutsmission bellhousing, but the cam signal is adjusted by rotating the distributor. If cam crank sync is lost at times, you may have some odd driveability symptoms, especially on a cold engine. (It also seemed to be where the symptoms were leading you)
I will attempt the check on the coil. Also it is a 36 dollar after market part. Should i just replace it based on the age of the vehicle, or do they eiwomens patagonia suede multicolor trail walking shoes size 10 new no boxther work or not.
Distributor has never been touched to the best of my knowledge. Bought the truck in immacculate like new condition with 50, 000m.
I dont want to speak ill of anyone but you have already been much more helpful then the first person who tried to answer my question. Thanks again. This would test the entire secondary igntition for integrity, as it quite a long way that the 20,000 (or so) volts has to travel in getting to the plugs. If you find it to have close to that 3/4 spark length. The engine controller places a 5v bias on the 02 sensor signal circuit that used for self diagnostics. This voltage SHOULD be consumed by actual output fropatagonia new yorkm the sensor, but if it a bit slow to heat up. part of the bias may remain and could drive the fuel system extremely lean. HIS problem turned out to be the engine controller (PCM), but it would be a longshot at this point to suggest such a thing. His problem seemed to be fuel related. as does yours. It not uncommon to have problems in the transition between open and closed loop operation, when the upstream oxygen sensor takes over, however. Any residual 5v bias left on the circuit will often be interpreted by the PCM as a rich mixture in the fuel system and it will take measures to lean the engine unitl the signal is reduced. It typically happens as you go deeper into the throttle and a significant acceleration sag occurs. If you note anything different about the drive cycle, it might be that the sag/ hesitation/ backfire happens earlier than normal as the fuel system sees sufficient engine heat to go closed loop. This may actually give the fuel system the time it needs to climb that hill without problem. we see! If this small change in timing before taking off for work makes a significant difference, we might simply be looking at a bad upstream oxygen sensor. patagonia guide jacket nike1this might be a good time. Your unit supports a code read program that allows codes to be displayed without a scan tool. By all means. leave me a message if you find something! Thanks, Mike. Talk in a bit!Ed
Let the truck warm up for 2.5 miutes and no back fire of power loss.
My truck does have 4 oxygen sensors 2 up and two down at a cost of $117 apiece from dodge or $80 dollars after market. (Don know which is better or nescessary)
Pust screw driver in plug wire and got quite the spark show (and turns out the screw driver handle is conductive lol). Tried this on the other side of engine as well and really did not see nearly as much spark i think that the srew driver was touching the ground not 3/4 of an inch away.
Read codes by key metod apatagonia guide jacket nikend nothing came up.
Thank youOh, man. you took one for the team! I hate voltage. gives me neck spasms.
Good info. It may mean that you have a slow to heat upstream sensor (or sensorS), there may be carbon deposits on the intake valves or that you may have fuel that a bit heavy on the volatility front. Giving the engine a little more run time before heading out will allow the sensors AND the intake valves to heat a bit more, eipatagonia guide pants in frenchther of which will help when it comes to cool engine driveability. Tough call!
I sure wish something had turned up on the code check; it would make things a bit easier. But with no clear direction, I not sure if we can solve this without scan tool data. some idea what going on with the oxygen sensors. I don like to throw parts at problems since there always a chance something might not stick and then you stuck with the expense. These sensors are quite the pain to repatagonia hiking shoes by new balanceplace by the way.
Let me think about it for a bit to look for some sort of workaround. In the meantime, try a different brand of gas and stay away from ethanol blends or higher octane than you need to make the truck run right.
